The 1,000-box price trap

Ordering more usually lowers the price per box. At Packlane, 1,000 14 × 10 × 4 mailers cost $1,230 more than two orders of 500. Here's every place we found bulk pricing working against you.

When 1,000 costs more than 2 × 500

Every supplier we track publishes price breaks: the more you order, the less each box costs. Usually. At Packlane, a 14 × 10 × 4 box costs $4.89 at 500 but $6.12 at 1,000. Order 1,000 at once and you pay $6,120. The same boxes at the 500-box price would be $4,890.

When ordering more saves nothing

A quieter version of the same trap: the price per box doesn't move between two tiers, so the bigger order just ties up more cash and shelf space.

The fee that makes small runs look cheap

EcoEnclose adds a one-time plate fee of $95 to $125, depending on box size. Their per-box price looks low, but a $125 fee adds $1.25 to every box at 100, and only $0.13 at 1,000. We include it in every total so the comparison is fair.

How to avoid it

  1. Before picking a quantity, look at the whole price-break table, not just the tier you planned on.
  2. If the per-box price rises at a bigger tier, place two smaller orders instead, or ask the supplier to match.
  3. If two tiers cost the same per box, buy the smaller one unless you'll definitely use the rest.
  4. Count one-time fees as part of the price, especially under 250 boxes.

Our comparison flags these automatically: open "Price breaks" under any supplier and traps show in amber.
